Press Release: For Release February 7, 2008 Local community leader, Reinette Senum, has announced her candidacy for Nevada City Council in the upcoming June 3, 2008 election. Ms. Senum is best known for her efforts in energy efficiency and the cost effectiveness of its use. She is a co-founder of PowerUp-NC, which focuses on finding energy efficient programs and incentives for Nevada City and other rural California communities. A Nevada County resident since 1971, Senum graduated from Nevada Union High School in 1984 and returned to deliver the commencement speech at the 2007 NU graduation. In the late eighties Senum trained with the International South Pole Expedition and continued her pursuit of extreme cold adventures in the early nineties. She founded the American Women’s Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1990 that would lead to the first female team reaching the South Pole in 1993. Senum has traveled throughout 50 countries, summiting various mountains including Mt. Rainier, Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. McKinley as well as trekking across East Africa alone on a shoestring budget. In 1994 she became the first woman to cross Alaska alone. She filmed her four-month, solo winter crossing for National Geographic. She has twice volunteered in the Hurricane Katrina area helping people rebuild and rescuing abandoned animals. Three years ago she held a conference on oil depletion, which later grew into the non-profit APPLE (Alliance for a Post-Petroleum Local Economy). The Clean Power Co-op of Nevada County, Yuba Gals’ Peak Moment Television, and the annual Power Palooza-clean energy extravaganza have since sprung from APPLE. Senum has acted in numerous local theater productions with the Foothill Theater, Off Broad Street, and more recently The Center for the Arts. She has a wide range of business skills acquired as a former business owner of one of the first cellular phone stores Nevada County, Empire Cellular in downtown Grass Valley in the early nineties. She has also held the position of Director of Acquisitions and Development for Intelliventures; a video production company in Los Angeles. For twenty years Senum has given motivational presentations to schools and organizations throughout the west coast states. She serves on the board of directors of APPLE, the Nevada City Downtown Association, CCAT (Citizens Concerned About Traffic) and is a member of the 49er Breakfast Rotary. Concludes Senum, “I believe in and support the arts, Nevada City and its neighborhoods, environment and businesses.
